This essay is a reflection on myself. It examines my clinical abilities and includes an analysis of my peer’s health assessment. Studies have shown that self-reflection is beneficial for students as it helps them understand themselves better by helping them express their feelings and emotions. I will integrate the theory and practice of Gibbs’ (1988). Gibbs’ six-stage model of reflection includes the following: description, feelings and evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and plan.

I will need to conduct a peer health assessment for the module. Although there are many systems available for the exam, we must only choose one. To see the assessment that I will be performing on my peer, I must draw lots. I got the assessment of cardiovascular system. I must present the findings to my subject coordinator after the examination. SBAR means to describe the situation, provide background information, assess the patient and then make a recommendation.

Before knowing what system I would get, I was initially anxious. Based on my experience with health assessment examinations, I can only choose the system about a minute before my exam starts. The course is very well-planned and allows for ample practice time before the exam. We were allowed draw much earlier. My peer and I conducted our assessment together with confidence. We were able to draw a lot earlier. After the assessment, my findings were presented to me by the lecturer. I’m calm in describing the SBAR findings to her, and she looks impressed. After the assessment, I offered my suggestions to her on what she should do.

It was overall a very positive experience. It has increased my nursing knowledge. There are areas that need improvement, based on peer review and my own reflection.

Critical thinking aside, I forgot the baseline blood pressure and vital sign readings for the patient before the assessment. I was just too distracted by the health examination to notice that. As a nurse, I know how important it is for nurses to have a baseline reading. Literature supports this idea.

To be safe, I forgot to demonstrate my hand hygiene. Instead of verbally telling my peer, I will do my hand hygiene. It is important that I take the initiative to do what I say and not simply verbalize.

Communication-wise, my efforts have been successful in that I have communicated my decision and rationale to my patient before she is examined. I also ensured that the patient was informed and that she felt comfortable throughout the entire process. I establish rapport with patients by asking them questions like they do every day. This will allow me to gain trust from my patients and facilitate cooperation.

I’m a competent technical expert. Her health assessment was thorough.

Examining

I have done a review of my abilities. Critical thinking is vital in nursing practice, as we all know. Nurses need to be able make sound clinical decisions that do not compromise patient safety. Before I started with the assessment, I should have thought about what the patient needs. To make a positive clinical recommendation, I need to monitor the baseline vital signs of the patient.

Safe practice in hospital is of paramount importance. This is why I placed a hand rubbed near my work station to adhere to the hospital’s guidelines for hand hygiene. Hand hygiene is essential for healthcare workers to prevent the spread of infection at work.

Communication is a key component of my success. I interact with patients during each assessment and I feel that I have communicated well. This is necessary to inform the patient about the reasons for the assessment. The patient will also benefit from communication with their doctor. This helps build trust and cooperation. The patient will also benefit from the information provided to her. The best way to help patients is to communicate with them.

I am proficient in technical skills and have completed the assessment efficiently. This is to avoid missing important information that could be used to assess the patient’s condition. To avoid misinterpretation, I followed the exact steps.

In summation

This reflection helped me to see my shortcomings in nursing skills. This will allow me improve in my professional work. It opens me up to peer feedback. It will also help me to improve my nursing skills by giving feedback. It will allow me to become a better, more skilled nurse in the long-term.

When I need to examine my patient in the future, I will make sure to plan ahead so that I don’t make any mistakes. I will make sure that the baseline vital sign of my patient is taken and recorded on a piece paper. I will have a hand rub nearby my workstation to make it easy for me to clean my hands. I am hoping that my reflections will be helpful in my performance of my duties.
